I was perfectly happy upgrading for a large amount every 2-3 years (InDesign, Illustrator, Photoshop, Bridge, Acrobat - and that's it), but I need to be relatively up to date to avoid incompatibilities. Having said that, I think that Adobe's subscription is way over on the left of the lock-in, money-grab axis. Put it this way - how much would it cost you if your data got into a Bad Person's hands? Things that you use all the time and are a vital component for your safety and convenience should be valued - and updated. I am really over the "software ought to be free" or "I bought it ten years ago so why should I pay again?" attitudes. I bought the Family subscription - helps encourage my kids to use a decent password manager and means that I can rescue them if they do something stupid (like forget their master password). at the same time I'm figuring out my crashplan exit strategy. Problem is that my windows 1password experience, while usable, has deteriorated and now I have to figure this out. I dislike that they have their own syncing platform, I would prefer to roll my own.I've been meaning to investigate this but have put it off. I don't want to have too many subscriptions, but I feel OK with spending money on this app given how much I use it. v4 windows doesn't appear to work with the browser plugins, and it's annoying. v4 sucks, and worse it wasn't clear to me how to get started, so now I get nagging reminders in windows about how there's a new version to download but I can't because that new version doesn't work with my license. This is confusing because I still have access to v6 in MacLand. Recently I started using a windows computer again, and only v4 of the windows app is supported under my old license. it's also revolutionized my approach to computing, allowing me to pick secure passwords, different passwords for each site, etc etc. $40 for 4.5 years, and I use this app many times every single day. I purchased a mac/win combo bundle in 2013, and have completely gotten my money's worth over the years. I've been confused by Agilebits recently. The worst issue I'm aware of with 1Password was the Cloudbleed thing, which was itself another error by a large company rather than Agilebits. That's probably worse than any 1Password issue I'm aware of, a rookie mistake. People may recall the high profile iCloud hacks a few years back, one of the big problems raised at the time was that Apple did not rate limit their authentication endpoint, making brute force attacks against a targeted iCloud account far easier than they should have been. Moving everything to their own API avoids this even if it's ultimately hosted using cloud providers that have a strong business incentive to fight overly broad searches.Īs to the idea large companies have better security from hacks, I don't think experience bears that out. There's either a bunch of extra steps (Dropbox), or it suffers from platform lock-in (iCloud). Having used both I find it far preferable to be able to use 1Password without managing a separate syncing mechanism. Moreover there's important usability considerations. I think they do use AWS, but they would be able to switch to GCP or Azure, or something else altogether, transparently to the user. Instead they can host their own API on a cloud provider, of which Google is one of the big ones. What I'm pointing out is that they don't need to use a third party branded syncing service like Google Drive, iCloud, or Dropbox, to enjoy the legal umbrella of a large company. The comment I was responding to was that Agilebits should want to "hand that responsibility" to Apple/Google/Dropbox because for example Apple would have greater resources to fight attempts to access data. ![]() Click to expand.I was aware they use AWS but that goes to the same point.
